Former Champs Drop Hard

Bad Day for Champs at World 9-Ball

Sometimes being a World Champion puts a big target on your back. Defending Champion Daryl Peach will not repeat his feat as he has gone two and out in Doha and his countryman and former World 10 Ball champion Darren Appleton shared that fate.

Peach lost his matches to Israel Rota of Qatar and Artem Koshovoj of the Ukraine, Appleton lost first to Jason Klatt of Canada and then to Taqi Moustafawi of Algeria. Today was mostly a day for the one-loss side to weed itself, but four men have made it through the winner’s side without a loss and so have graduated from the group stages into the final rounds. They are Shane Van Boening of the USA, Ibrahim Bin Amir of Malaysia, Lui Hui Chan of Taipei and Scott Higgins of Great Britain.

Van Boening of the USA, Ibrahim Bin Amir of Malaysia, Lui Hui Chan of Taipei and Scott Higgins of Great Britain are still undefeated.

Imran Majid had a bad stay in Doha. Another two and out victim, he lost to two very fine players in the form of Martussz Skoneczny of Poland and Bruno Muratore of Italy. Most of the other big names are still alive, but there are many more one-loss matches to be played so some of them will no doubt bite the dust and never reach the last stage.

Play resumes on Thursday and we will keep you updated as to the fates of all the players.

WPA World 9-Ball Championships Begin Second Stage

The World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) World 9-Ball Championship has now begun the second stage in Doha, Qatar at the headquarters of the Qatar Billiard and Snooker Federation (QBSF). The first round of the group stage matches began today. Each contestant is in a group that contains four other players and they will play down inside those groups until there are only two players left on both the winners side and on the one-loss side. Those 64 players will then progress to the championship round of play.

The first day is usually one of surprises ands we had a few today. Already on the one-loss side of the bracket are such champions as Imran Majid, Marlon Manalo, Thorsten Hohmann, Ernesto Dominquez, Fabio Petroni, Kuo Po Chen, Oscar Dominquez, Daryl Peach, Jeff De Luna, Efren Reyes and Ralf Souquet. In most tournaments that field would be the cream of the final sixteen.

Yednak Scores Tri-State Victory
Tri-State Tour / New York, NY

by InsidePOOL Staff

Michael Yednak went through the Tri-State Tour’s June 26-27 event undefeated to take first place over Javier Colayco in the finals. The $1,000-added event was hosted by Amsterdam Billiards in New York, NY, and brought 35 players out to compete in the handicapped format.

On the winners’ side final four, Yednak faced down Michael Wong and moved past him to the hot seat match with a 7-5 victory. Meeting him was Andrew Cleary, who dispatched Sandie Patarino to the one-loss side after their hill-hill encounter. The hot seat match saw Yednak advance to the finals 11-7, while Cleary faced the west side of the chart.

Wong and Patarino foundered after their first losses and were eliminated in fifth place by Jacob Schwartz 7-5 and Colayco 6-4, respectively. The quarterfinal match was a hill-hill nail-biter that saw Colayco edge out Schwartz 7-6. Another close match in the semifinals followed, with Colayco sending Cleary home in third place 7-5. But Colayco was stopped in his tracks in the final match with Yednak, who won 10-5 to take the title.

Multi-Winners Abound at the 2010 ACS Nationals in Las Vegas

So many divisions! So many winners and multi-division champions! As with each of the six National Championships produced by the American CueSports Alliance (ACS) – and this year welcoming its new league and championship sponsor: Lucasi Hybrid Cues – the annual spectacle at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, June 6-12, showcased formats that encouraged many different winners…in many different formats…for many different skill levels…along with multi-titlists in the higher-skilled divisions.

Multi-titlists included the likes of: Debra Aarens (Las Vegas, NV) who anchored the Women’s Open 8-Ball Team Champion “Smokin’ 8s,” the same Women’s Open 9-Ball Team runner-ups, and placed as the Women’s 9-Ball Singles runner-up; Dustin Gunia (Omaha, NE) who won the Men’s 9-Ball Singles crown and shared top honors as well with his Master 8-Ball Scotch Doubles partner, Jessica Frideres (Fort Dodge, IA) [Jessica also anchored the champion Women’s Open 9-Ball team “Which Witch Is Which” as well]; Christy Goldsmith (Henderson, NV) who won the Women’s Speed Pool Challenge, placed 2nd in the Women’s Open 8-Ball Singles and 2nd again on Vegas’s “I Had A Plan” team in the Women’s Open 8-Ball Teams; Beth Fondell (Owatonna, MN) who won the coveted Women’s Master 8-Ball Singles crown and placed runner-up with partner and Men’s Speed Pool Champion, Jerrod Frideres in the Master 8-Ball Scotch Doubles category; Edward Mataya who was runner-up in the Men’s Open 8-Ball Singles and anchored both the repeating champion “Malarkey’s” Men’s Open 9-Ball team from Tacoma, WA and the same “Malarkey’s” Men’s Open 8-Ball Team 3rd-place finisher; and Mary Rayner (Calgary, AB) who captured the Women’s Standard 8-Ball Singles title and placed 2nd with partner Brian Bird in the Open 8-Ball Scotch Doubles division.

The Championships also highlighted its share of first-time national champions: Standard player Kassandra Bein (Virginia Beach, VA) outdistancing some much stronger players to take the handicapped Women’s 9-Ball Singles title; Ray Skenandore (Las Vegas, NV) who has improved in the Men’s Open 8-Ball Singles field every year until finally claiming the title in 2010; Jeff Heath (Reno, NV) who has always threatened but never claimed the Men’s Master 8-Ball Singles title until this year; York Haven, PA’s Christine Chamberlain in the Women’s Open 8-Ball Singles; Robert White (Conception Bay South, NF) who probably traveled the farthest to take down a title – that of the Men’s Standard 8-Ball Singles; Pat Mowdy (Longview, WA) who improved on his runner-up performance in 2008 to take down the 2010 crown in the Men’s Senior 8-Ball Singles division; Shawn Modelo (Antioch, CA) who claimed the top award in her rookie year in the Women’s Senior 8-Ball Singles; and Milton Strack (Monticello, IL) who – after thirty years of competing in various national championships in Vegas – finally claimed a national championship trophy for his case against a very formidable Super Senior 8-Ball Singles field.

In the Open Scotch Doubles contest, Lexington, Kentucky’s Samantha Patton teamed up with her league mate, 2009 Super Senior 8-Ball Singles champ Madison Adkins, to claim the top spot; and Madison went on to help his “American Legion Post # 313” (KY) team to win the Open 8-Ball Team title after knocking on that door for the previous five years. Lexington, Kentucky’s other powerhouse team, “Mike’s Team/Silver Cue,” almost brought another national trophy home with a runner-up performance in the Open 9-Ball Team division won by defending champs, Malarkey’s of Tacoma, WA. Las Vegas struck again, with the “Tuesday – Rich” team capturing top honors in the Men’s Standard 8-Ball Team division, while Texas claimed honors thanks to the performance of team “Flawless” in the Women’s Standard 8-Ball Team class. Aside from Scotch Doubles honors, Canada claimed further team honors by capturing the Men’s Master 9-Ball Team competition, courtesy of team “Fort McMurray” (AB).

In 2011, the ACS is excited about moving the newly titled Lucasi Hybrid Cues ACS National Championships to the newly renovated Tropicana Las Vegas – a month earlier – May 7-14 ! Players will be royally entertained at this legendary anchor on the southern Vegas strip that is transforming itself into the best modern, mid-priced value in Las Vegas. The ACS looks forward to continuing to build its ranks in 2010/2011 through its twelve state associations and championships and its independent leagues, its Lucasi Hybrid All American Tour, and to welcoming players to its $10,000 added 2011 Midwest 8-Ball Championships, January 20-23 at the Riverside Casino in central Iowa, and to the 2011 ACS Nationals at the Tropicana Las Vegas in May !! Complete results and winners photos may be viewed online at www.americancuesports.org.

Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour / Phoenix, AZ

by InsidePOOL Staff

Ashea Erdahl came out on top of the Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour’s 17-player field, defeating Barbara Lee in the finals for the title. The $300-added event was hosted by Bullshooters in Phoenix, AZ, and played on 9-foot tables.

Erdahl went unchallenged through the event, defeating Lee for the first time in the event in the hot seat match 7-3. Lee went on to face down Rebecca Wagner in the semifinal match in a hill-hill nail-biter to earn a rematch with Erdahl.

In the final race to 9, Erdahl took an early 3-0 lead, but Lee won the next two racks. Erdahl took the next three games, with Lee only winning one before Erdahl reached the hill 8-3. Though Lee won the next rack, it wasn’t enough to ward off Erdahl, who took the final rack and the victory 9-4.

O’Neal Owns Great Southern Billiard Field

O’Neal Owns Great Southern Billiard Field
Great Southern Billiard Tour / Murfreesboro, TN

by Lea Andrews

The first and last face Josh O’Neal saw at the June 26-27 Great Southern Billiard Tour event belonged to Russ Edwards, the first and last of O’Neal’s many victims. AA-ranked O’Neal went undefeated through the field of 40 that arrived at Murfreesboro Billiards in Murfreesboro, TN, for the $1,500-added event, which was sponsored by Nick Varner Cues and Cases.

While AA-ranked Edwards was moving steadily through the left side of the bracket following his first-round 10-5 loss to O’Neal, O’Neal was making his own steady path through the winners’ side. A strong 10-2 win over A-ranked Ryan Dunn put him into the hot seat match against Mike Laney, who’d just sent AA-ranked Billy Young west 10-6. O’Neal, who’d had several high finishes on the tour but had yet to make it to the finals, earned his first finals appearance with a convincing 10-1 victory.

On the one-loss side, former winner Daniel McKinney took care of fellow A-player Brad Hutchins 9-5 and B player Ricardo Nixon 9-5 to face Young, whom he ousted by yet another strong score of 9-5 to reach the quarterfinals, where he met up with a determined Edwards. Edwards, who’d just run through B players Heath Reynolds 9-5 and Jeremy Scarpace 9-1, and A-ranked Dunn 9-4, went smoothly through McKinney 9-7 to advance to the semifinals against Laney. Both of O’Neal’s victims fought hard all the way to hill-hill for the right to the rematch in the finals, but Edwards marked up the final game, moving on to the true double-elimination final match 9-9.

But revenge was not in the cards for Edwards. The fact that O’Neal was in the finals for the first time, and that he could stand to lose the first set, didn’t slow him down at all—he pushed hard to maintain complete control throughout the set, earning his first tour win 10-3.

Strickland Stomps the Jacoby Field

Strickland Stomps the Jacoby Field

Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour / Raleigh, NC

by Lea Andrews

After a couple of disappointing showings on the Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour earlier this season, Earl Strickland is back in top form. “The Pearl” showed off his stuff by plowing undefeated through a strong field of 15 at the $1,000-added June 26-27 stop, which was held at Brown’s Billiards in Raleigh, NC.

To reach the hot seat match, Strickland first had to get past BJ Ussery, who was looking for his fourth Jacoby win in a row — fifth total this season — but Strickland managed to mark up the last game in their hill-hill match to meet up with Keith Bennett, who’d just sent Delton Howard west 7-4. No strangers, the hot seat match, the finals, or each other, Bennett and Strickland both fought hard to become the last man standing on the winners’ side, but it was Strickland who earned it 7-5.

On the one-loss side, Sam Monday, who was there thanks to a second-round 7-4 loss to Howard, swept past WPBA pro Belinda Calhoun 7-2 and Brian Simpson 7-2 to meet up with Ussery. Meanwhile, Tony Morrison notched his own 7-2 victory over Jeff Pruitt and a strong 7-1 win over Chris Vollmar to face Howard, but a 7-4 loss planted him in fifth. Howard moved on to the quarterfinals against Monday, who’d ended Ussery’s hopes of four in a row 7-2, but Howard’s second go at Monday didn’t end as well for him as the first — Monday exacted his revenge 7-4 to advance to the semifinals against Bennett. Bennett was ready to get back to Strickland, though, and he blew past Monday 7-1 to get there.

But Strickland was ready for him, and the first six games of the single race-to-11 final match were over in 18 minutes — Strickland was up 6-0. His scratch on the break in the next rack, though, gave control to Bennett, who ran to a 4-9 combination to mark up his first game, and he marked up his second after Strickland hung the 2 ball. Strickland took the next two to make it 8-2, and though Bennett rebounded a bit to get it to 8-5 and 9-7, that was as close as he got. Strickland took the last two racks to close out his first win this season 11-7.

After a couple of disappointing showings on the Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour earlier this season, Earl Strickland is back in top form.

Other victors this weekend include Solomon Pope, winner of Friday’s early bird event; Dylan Wetchworth, who topped the juniors’ division; Belinda Calhoun, who topped the ladies’; and Michael Yingling, winner of the second chance event. Mike Bogey took home a brand new Jacoby cue after his ticket was drawn in the raffle, and John Trinh took home $85 for his performance in the break contest. The break and run pot went unclaimed at this event, and it will roll over at $91 at the next event, which will be held July 23-24 at Breaktime Billiards in Wilmington, NC.

1st Earl Strickland $1,000

Double J Spells Double Doom
Lone Star Billiards Tour / Houston, TX

by InsidePOOL Staff

The action was hot and heavy on the Lone Star Billiards Tour with over $11k up for grabs the weekend of June 19-20. Q Stix Billiards in Houston, TX, hosted 86 total entries—54 in open 10-ball, 21 in open ladies’ 9-ball, and 11 in open one-pocket. While Ming Ng took top honors in the ladies’ event, it was Jeremy “Double J” Jones who took both the 10-ball and the one-pocket titles.

As the open event progressed, the final four saw Jones versus Billy Sharp for the hot seat and Charlie “Hillbilly” Bryant against Sylver Ochoa on the one-loss side. Jones bested Sharp 9-5 to claim the hot seat, while Bryant eliminated Ochoa 7-1 in fourth place. In the semifinals, Sharp tried but fell short, and Bryant earned the opportunity to avenge his 9-5 loss to Jones earlier that day. Jones and Bryant traded game for game in the final set until it was 7-all. In the end, Jones closed it out 9-7 for an undefeated victory.

The ladies’ event commenced Sunday and included tour points leader Kyu Yi and multiple event winner Terry Petrosino. In the hot seat match, Ng ousted Petrosino, and on the one-loss side Deanna Kniola bested Kyu Yi 7-3 but then lost to Petrosino in the semifinals 5-3. These two focused finalists made for a great match, with Ng taking the win 7-3.

In Sunday’s one-pocket continuance, Jones defeated Ernesto Bayaua for the hot seat, and Strickland suffered a loss from Bryant on the one-loss side. Bryant eliminated Bayaua for yet another shot at Jones and a victory. However, because of physical discomfort, Bryant forfeited the win to Jones and took second place.
